Customer experience in grocery retail is often shaped by small details: the quality and freshness of products, the breadth of assortment, the ease of finding what you need, the atmosphere of the store, or how smoothly the shopping trip unfolds from start to finish.
At Staffino, we analysed public online reviews of selected supermarket chains operating in Romania and used Staffino Review Radar to identify the brands that stand out in specific areas of customer experience. Review Radar automatically collects and consolidates public reviews from platforms such as Google and transforms them into insights about performance, sentiment, and competitive differentiation.
The result is another edition of our Public Reviews Spotlight series—an overview of what customers value most across some of Romania’s best-known supermarket brands.
How Did We Choose the Brands for This Analysis?
We included leading supermarket chains operating in the Romanian market that met basic representativeness criteria:
- they operate a nationwide or significant regional store network,
- they have at least 500 public online reviews across all analysed locations,
- their stores follow a comparable retail format,
- they generated sufficient open-text feedback volume during the analysed period to allow reliable topic categorisation.
The goal was not to compare small local retailers or speciality stores, but to create a fair benchmark among brands that Romanian consumers commonly perceive as major grocery retail players.
Which Categories Did We Evaluate?
Review Radar categorised public reviews according to the topics customers most frequently mention when evaluating grocery stores. The main categories included:

Methodology: How Customer Reviews Were Analysed in This Study
This analysis was prepared using Staffino Review Radar, an AI-powered public review analytics engine. Review Radar collects public reviews across selected locations, categorises feedback into customer experience topics, evaluates sentiment, and benchmarks brands against competitors.
Beyond star ratings alone, the analysis focuses on why customers praise particular brands, whether for product quality, assortment, pricing, freshness, convenience, or customer service. The result is an objective view of competing brands based on authentic customer reviews and real market signals.
What Customers Appreciate Most About Romanian Supermarkets?
Kaufland: Leader in Overall Customer Satisfaction
Kaufland achieved the highest average customer rating (4.45★) in the analysis and shares the strongest overall net sentiment score among the evaluated chains (+33.3%). This combination reflects a consistently positive shopping experience across multiple aspects of the customer journey.
Customers particularly appreciate Kaufland’s broad product range, strong freshness perception, well-maintained stores, and convenient locations. Rather than relying on a single standout strength, the brand performs well across a wide spectrum of customer experience categories, making it a preferred destination for larger grocery shopping trips.
Lidl: Leader in Product Range, Freshness, and Bakery Experience
Lidl delivers one of the most consistently strong customer experiences in the Romanian grocery market. The chain achieves leading results across several categories, including product range, freshness, bakery and deli offerings, store condition, and pricing perception.
Customers associate Lidl with quality fresh products, an attractive assortment, and a pleasant shopping environment. It is also the only chain in the analysis with clearly positive sentiment in the staff and customer service category, highlighting the role employees play in the overall customer experience.
Rather than excelling in just one area, Lidl’s strength comes from delivering a balanced and reliable shopping experience that customers repeatedly recognise in their reviews.
Auchan: Leader in Customer Dialogue
Auchan responds to 99.7% of all public reviews—the highest rate of any chain in this analysis. Customer feedback is viewed as an opportunity for dialogue rather than simply a performance metric. In a market where many retailers respond to few or none of their public reviews, Auchan’s approach creates a visible point of differentiation.
Customers also speak positively about the chain’s assortment and overall shopping experience (the second-highest average rating in the set of 4.38★), helping Auchan maintain one of the strongest average ratings among the evaluated brands.
Carrefour: Leader in Location Accessibility and Checkout Efficiency
Carrefour‘s strongest competitive advantage comes from convenience. Customers consistently highlight the accessibility of its stores and the ease of completing their shopping trips, giving the chain one of the strongest positions in the location and checkout-related categories.
Compared with the market average, Carrefour significantly outperforms competitors when it comes to making shopping simple and accessible. These advantages matter because convenience remains one of the most important decision factors for everyday grocery purchases.
Carrefour also demonstrates a strong commitment to customer communication, responding to more than 90% of public reviews. This places the brand among the most active retailers in managing customer feedback and reinforces its customer-centric image.
Penny: Leader in Price Accessibility
Penny‘s strongest reputation driver is value for money. Customers frequently highlight pricing and product availability, indicating that the brand successfully delivers on its promise of affordable grocery shopping.
For many consumers, price remains one of the most important factors when choosing where to shop, and Penny’s positive perception in this area creates a meaningful competitive advantage.
The results show that customers clearly recognise the brand’s affordability and accessible product offer, making value one of the core pillars of Penny’s market positioning.
What Does the Analysis Reveal about Romanian Grocery Retail?
The analysis shows that customer experience in grocery retail is not defined by a single universal factor. Different brands earn customer appreciation for different reasons:
- Kaufland stands out through its strong overall customer experience and balanced performance across multiple categories.
- Lidl excels in product range, freshness, bakery quality, and service consistency.
- Auchan differentiates itself through outstanding customer engagement and review responsiveness.
- Carrefour builds its advantage around convenience, accessibility, and customer communication.
- Penny is most strongly associated with affordability and value for money.
For retail leaders, the message is clear: customers remember much more than prices alone. They remember whether products were fresh, whether they found everything they needed, whether the store felt pleasant and accessible, and whether the overall shopping experience was simple and convenient
